Why is a Chinese-made portable AC selling out across heat-stricken Europe?

South China Morning Post  |  Mia Nurmamat

Midea’s PortaSplit, a specialized Chinese-made portable air conditioner, has completely sold out across heat-stricken Europe within just a few weeks during intense summer heatwaves. This sudden supply deficit has triggered significant resale price mark-ups on secondary markets and driven unprecedented consumer demand for expedited shipping options across the continent's major urban centers.

European renters are increasingly favoring these plug-and-play cooling systems to bypass strict local installation barriers, high costs, and structural regulations associated with traditional split-system units. Developed partly at the manufacturer's German research and development center, this specific appliance combines the high efficiency of a permanent split system with the flexible mobility of a portable unit. As extreme summer temperatures become more frequent across the continent, this rapid sell-out highlights the growing reliance of European consumers on innovative Chinese home appliance manufacturers to meet their immediate climate adaptation and domestic cooling needs.
