We've Seen Autonomous Warfare and We're in Trouble

The United States military is pivoting its defense industrial base to a wartime footing through a 50-billion-dollar modernization program to equip every warfighter with low-cost, attritable drones. This strategic shift aims to counter adversarial scaling, where China is projected to manufacture 100 million drones annually, far outpacing current American procurement targets.

Lessons from the conflict in Ukraine demonstrate that autonomous systems have evolved from supporting tools into decisive combat instruments, rendering traditional combined arms doctrine obsolete. To maintain operational relevance, the military must restructure into specialized unmanned battalions capable of finding, fixing, and finishing targets up to 300 kilometers away. Future warfare will likely transition to highly automated, AI-mediated environments where individual tacticians remotely command autonomous swarms via neural interfaces. Consequently, the nation that successfully automates end-to-end logistical and tactical tasks will secure a decisive decision-making advantage, forcing a complete re-evaluation of human roles on the battlefield.

The Pentagon's Replicator initiative exposes a fundamental mismatch between Western high-value, low-volume defence manufacturing and the attrition-dominated realities of modern peer conflict. While traditional aerospace primes are optimised for exquisite platforms like the F-35 Lightning II, scaling to the tens of millions of attritable systems required for a Taiwan Strait conflict is hindered by the rigidities of the commercial supply chain. Consequently, the American defence industrial base's reliance on Chinese-dominated supply chains for lithium-ion batteries and printed circuit boards severely constrains the rapid scaling of these low-cost platforms.
