Why the US Power Grid Is Central to Military Readiness

The US electric power grid has become a critical vulnerability for military readiness, as 99 percent of domestic military installations rely on this civilian infrastructure for their energy needs. This dependency exposes critical defense systems and artificial intelligence platforms to potential disruptions during a sustained geopolitical conflict. While coal and oil historically drove mobilization, modern warfighting architectures are deeply integrated with electricity-intensive platforms.

The 2027 National Defense Authorization Act highlights this persistent challenge, particularly as the military faces a statutory mandate to achieve 99.9 percent to 99.9999 percent energy reliability for critical missions by 2030. Meeting these standards requires integrating island-capable microgrids, battery storage, and advanced small modular reactors. Meanwhile, China holds a distinct advantage in firm, baseload power generation, with younger thermal assets and faster grid interconnection timelines. The authors recommend a Department of Defense-led industrial base review under frameworks similar to Executive Order 14265 to prepare the balkanized domestic grid for potential wartime energy rationing.
