Who is Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's new supreme leader?

Mojtaba Khamenei has been selected as Iran’s new supreme leader following the deaths of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and his family in US-Israeli military strikes. The 56-year-old successor, who has historically maintained a low profile without holding formal government office, now faces the critical task of preserving the Islamic Republic amid severe political and economic devastation.

His elevation marks a controversial shift toward hereditary succession, contradicting the anti-monarchical founding principles of the 1979 revolution which dictate leadership based on religious scholarship. To bolster his credentials, supporters recently elevated his clerical status to 'Ayatollah,' mirroring the rapid promotion of his father in 1989. Despite past accusations of political interference during the 2005 and 2009 elections, he is expected to maintain a hardline stance against Western pressure. However, he must navigate deep public discontent and direct security threats, as Israel’s defense minister recently declared the new leader an unequivocal target for elimination.
