After the end of history

Asia Times | Jan Krikke

Ukraine stands as the focal point where the post-Cold War convergence thesis of free markets, democracy, and Western alliances simultaneously collapsed. The war in Ukraine has entered its fifth winter alongside Washington’s pivot toward brokering a territorial freeze rather than arming Kyiv. Decades of Western expansion through institutions like the IMF and NATO ignored geopolitical warnings, including Vladimir Putin’s 2007 Munich Security Conference address and the 2008 Bucharest summit declaration.

Western economic sanctions failed to cripple Moscow, which redirected its oil exports eastward to India and China. Meanwhile, the European Union runs a goods trade deficit with China approaching 1 billion euros daily, while political fragmentation deepens across European states. The unipolar moment has definitively ended, giving way to a fraying multipolar order defined by great power competition.

Comment

The 2008 Bucharest summit declaration codified an unsustainable security guarantee that lacked the military architecture to enforce it. By promising membership without establishing a forward-deployed deterrent along the eastern border, Western capitals created a strategic vacuum that invited pre-emptive revisionism. This disjuncture between diplomatic posturing and operational realities ultimately exposed the limits of an enlargement strategy untethered from territorial defense capabilities.

Strategic Question for Discussion
What happens to the credibility of extended deterrence guarantees when the sponsoring coalition lacks the industrial mobilization capacity to sustain a high-intensity land war in Europe?
The erosion of manufacturing depth makes traditional alliance commitments increasingly difficult to underwrite without significant risk of escalation. This structural deficit points toward a future where security architectures rely less on expansive territorial pledges and more on localized balancing mechanisms.
