JD Vance Is Wrong: Israel Is Not Just Another Ally

National Interest  |  Ahmed Charai

Vice President JD Vance's assertion that Israel is "an ally like any other" is flawed, dismissing the fears of America's most reliable Middle Eastern partner and undermining deterrence. His public impatience with Israel and Gulf allies, while granting diplomatic patience to Iran, contradicts how a great power reassures friends.

The Vice President's words carry immense strategic weight, traveling globally to reassure allies or encourage adversaries. America must lead without losing allied trust, recognizing the deep strategic, democratic, and historical bond with Israel. This relationship is a vital strategic interdependence, particularly given Iran's destabilizing actions via missiles, drones, and proxy networks against Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait. These front-line countries, having embraced the Abraham Accords, deserve respect and consultation, not public scolding or dismissal of their existential threats. Vance's skepticism appears sharper toward Israel than toward the Iranian regime, which actively threatens regional security. America's alliances, including Israel's security and Gulf stability, are instruments of American power, strengthening deterrence and protecting global energy markets. Publicly humiliating allies weakens confidence and emboldens adversaries.
