The 20-year American war in Afghanistan concluded ingloriously five years ago, marked by the United States' final withdrawal of 2,500 troops beginning in April 2021, with a target completion by September. This departure swiftly triggered the collapse of the U.S.-backed government and military infrastructure. Within weeks of the initial U.S.
troop movements, Taliban forces rapidly advanced, seizing numerous strategic positions as Afghan government forces proved unable to withstand the offensive and melted away. By early August 2021, the Taliban had established control over the majority of provincial capitals across Afghanistan. The culmination of this rapid takeover occurred on August 15, 2021, when the U.S.-supported government in Kabul officially collapsed. This dramatic event led to a humanitarian crisis at Kabul International Airport, where hundreds of thousands of terrified Afghans converged, desperately seeking evacuation. Approximately 120,000 individuals were ultimately airlifted out amidst the chaos.
