Trump gets his deal, but Netanyahu gets a nightmare

President Trump's memorandum of understanding for a ceasefire with Iran addresses a political vulnerability for him but creates a significant political nightmare for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While the war with Iran has been unpopular among Americans, Israeli opinion polling indicates 79 percent of Israelis overwhelmingly support continuing the conflict.

Netanyahu now faces the challenge of ending a war his constituents want to pursue, while also balancing his responsibility to protect Israelis against increasingly hostile rhetoric from Trump and Vice President JD Vance. The deal allows Iran to dictate Israel’s freedom of action in Lebanon, using Israeli self-defense strikes as a pretext for causing issues for the U.S. Furthermore, the agreement frontloads benefits to Iran, including immediate sanctions relief allowing oil sales and unfreezing funds, effectively surrendering America’s leverage.
