US Army trials advanced military planning platform to speed battlefield decisions

The US Army is testing an experimental artificial intelligence platform designed to dramatically accelerate battlefield planning by reducing decision-making timelines from days or hours to just seconds. Known as the Course of Action Generative Pre-trained Transformer (COA-GPT), this system helps military personnel rapidly develop and adapt operational plans while maintaining human oversight.

Developed by researchers at the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory, the software addresses the critical challenge of human-machine integration during high-tempo combat scenarios. The service is currently evaluating the technology during Project Convergence Capstone 6, its premier joint experimentation exercise held at Fort Irwin, California. By combining automated recommendations with human judgment, the initiative aims to provide commanders and intelligence teams with a highly flexible framework for rapid operational adjustments in future contested environments. Ultimately, these trials will determine how effectively the platform can synthesize complex battlefield data to support agile command structures under intense operational pressure.
