Azerbaijan–Uzbekistan Partnership Gains Momentum

Eurasia Daily Monitor  |  Roza Bayramli

Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are rapidly strengthening bilateral relations, with Ambassador Bahrom Ashrafkhanov stating on June 1, 2026, that ties are experiencing unprecedented development. Azerbaijan's formal admission to the C6 format in November 2025 established a broader geopolitical and geo-economic space linking Central Asia and the South Caucasus. This partnership reinforces Baku’s role as the South Caucasus anchor for westward connectivity and provides Tashkent access to the Caspian Sea, Türkiye, and European markets, alongside global investment and energy opportunities.

The 2024 Agreement on Allied Relations, ratified by Uzbekistan in May 2025, institutionalized this strategic alignment. Bilateral trade reached $319 million by September 2025, an 87.5% increase. Energy cooperation includes a $2 billion Production Sharing Agreement in Uzbekistan’s Ustyurt region involving SOCAR, Uzbekneftegaz, and BP, plus the Green Corridor Alliance for renewable energy export to Europe. Transport links are crucial, with Baku International Sea Trade Port at Alat experiencing a 40.8% increase in container turnover by November 2025. The upgraded Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway and the planned China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway connection to the Middle Corridor aim to create a multi-route Eurasian transit system.
