Chinese Missile Might Have Been Used to Shoot Down F-15E in Iran – U.S. Officials

U.S. officials are investigating the possibility that a Chinese-made shoulder-fired Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) missile was used to shoot down a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle over Iran on May 30, 2026. This follows earlier Donald Trump’s hints from April and denials from the Chinese Embassy regarding Chinese weapon transfers.

NBC News quoted officials stating the F-15 was "probably struck" by a Chinese MANPADS, potentially supported by a Chinese long-range early-warning radar for stealth aircraft, received by Iran "in the early days" of the war. China's embassy emphasized strict export controls and opposed "groundless smear." Iran's air defenses include domestically developed, Russian S-300PMU2, and rumored Chinese systems like the YLC-8B X-band radar and HQ-9B SAM. If confirmed, this marks the second Western platform downed by a Chinese weapon, following a May 2025 air skirmish involving a PL-15 missile. China-Iran defense cooperation goes back since the 1980s, involves dual-use components and oil-for-weapons bartering, with the lack of formal U.S. protest suggesting diplomatic considerations. Iran's air defense lacks full integration, relying on Russian and Chinese satellite targeting information.
