China declares branch of ‘Xi Jinping Thought’ as official party doctrine

South China Morning Post  |  Phoebe Zhang, William Zheng

China's ruling Communist Party has officially announced "Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building" as a new branch of President Xi Jinping's political doctrine, emphasizing strict discipline and unified leadership. This concept, hailed as a milestone in Marxist theory and Chinese Communist Party building, was officially coined at a meeting chaired by Cai Qi, the party's ideology chief.

Developed since the 18th National Party Congress in 2012, it provides a fundamental guideline for strengthening party building in the new era, outlining "14 insists" including centralized leadership and rigorous self-governance. A major focus is fighting corruption, aiming to ensure officials lack the audacity, opportunity, or desire to commit corruption. Official news agency Xinhua stated the doctrine reveals "why the Communist Party of China works, why Marxism works and why socialism with Chinese characteristics works." Xie Maosong of Tsinghua University described it as "long-term," "strict," and "rule-based," set to guide the party for decades.
