Trump Calls Iran "Scum." Another Reversal is Coming

Fridainsight | Frida Ghitis

U.S. launched strikes in Bandar Abbas, Iran, following Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a resumption of hostilities after President Trump publicly denounced Iran as "scum" at a NATO summit. This reversal signals the collapse of the Islamabad Memorandum (MOU), a peace deal negotiated by Vice President JD Vance.

The MOU, inherently flawed with contradictions and vagueness, had guaranteed renewed conflict, particularly concerning Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz and the astonishing waiver of sanctions on its oil exports. Iran views Hormuz control as a strategic weapon, prompting tanker attacks and U.S. retaliatory strikes, including suspended oil waivers. This outcome benefits Iran, posing a loss for the U.S. and Gulf allies who may concede to Tehran for crude exports. Moreover, the MOU's scandalous Lebanon clause protected Iran-allied Hezbollah, directly opposing Secretary of State Marco Rubio's efforts to broker the Trilateral Framework between Israel, Lebanon, and the U.S. Despite Trump's rhetoric, another ceasefire is probable, but the 60-day talks will likely fail, ultimately strengthening Iran.
