China Protects Its AI from an Invisible Threat the US Ignores

China is actively deploying cloned American technology to protect its AI data centers from geomagnetic disturbances, while the United States remains highly vulnerable to these space weather threats. This critical technological asymmetry threatens to compromise massive American computing infrastructure investments during a major solar storm. Solar storms induce ground-induced currents that saturate high-voltage transformers, generating destructive harmonic distortions that amplify downstream at lower voltages where sensitive digital infrastructure operates.

While routine space weather already costs the domestic economy an estimated $10 billion annually, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation maintains artificially low protection standards that ignore these harmonics. Future geomagnetic disturbances of the scale observed by the STEREO-A satellite in 2012 will likely result in prolonged operational paralysis for unprotected Western computing clusters while Chinese facilities remain functional.
