Iran Is Winning the Vibe War

Foreign Policy | Peter Benzoni

Iran is successfully dominating the digital information space through highly coordinated online meme campaigns and artificial intelligence-generated content, fundamentally shifting public perception amidst escalating tensions with the United States. This rapid proliferation of "AI slop" and viral propaganda has effectively overwhelmed traditional Western counter-disinformation frameworks, which remain ill-equipped to neutralize decentralized, emotion-driven narrative warfare.

As geopolitical friction intensifies near the Strait of Hormuz, these digital influence operations serve as a critical asymmetric tool to erode domestic and international support for potential American military interventions. Consequently, Washington's conventional strategic communications are rendered increasingly obsolete against agile, low-cost digital tactics that exploit existing societal polarization. With speculative discussions rising regarding a potential United States ground invasion of Iran, the ongoing digital campaign demonstrates how modern conflict is waged as much on social media feeds as on physical battlefields, signaling a permanent transformation in the doctrine of psychological operations.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps leverages decentralised digital networks to offset its conventional military deficits. By deploying automated content generation alongside proxy networks like the Houthi media apparatus, Tehran projects regional influence far beyond its physical naval reach. This reliance on cognitive manipulation represents an Iranian doctrinal shift prioritising digital narrative dominance over conventional sea control. Consequently, the deterrent value of physical naval deployments in the Bab el-Mandeb is degraded when local populations are systematically insulated from Western diplomatic messaging.
