Is the US already in World War IV — and losing?

China and other foreign adversaries are actively bypassing conventional strategic deterrence by developing asymmetrical cyber-warfare capabilities designed to cripple critical infrastructure in the United States. Rather than deploying nuclear warheads or ballistic missiles, adversary operations target municipal water supplies, electrical grids, financial transaction systems, satellite networks, and air traffic control.

A 2018 Government Accountability Office report previously revealed mission-critical cyber vulnerabilities in nearly all U.S. weapon systems tested between 2012 and 2017. Recent real-world disruptions underscore these risks, including Iranian cyber intrusions affecting water systems across 12 states, alongside federal warnings regarding saboteurs compromising water operations in seven additional states. The increasing integration of artificial intelligence, autonomous robotics, automated utilities, driverless vehicles, and digital currency creates vast technical attack surfaces. Consequently, pre-positioned drone swarms, deepfake disinformation campaigns, and systemic network hacks threaten to compromise national defense architectures, allowing enemies to force an unconditional surrender without kinetic destruction.
