Two axes of a new Middle East

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey recently established the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, a mutual defense pact stipulating that an attack on any member constitutes an attack on all three. This emerging Sunni security bloc directly signals regional strategic self-reliance to Washington while attempting to deter Iran and counter Israeli military reach across West Asia.

Meanwhile, an informal Indo-Abrahamic coalition comprising India, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates is expanding bilateral security cooperation, counter-terrorism intelligence sharing, and defense technologies across the Indian Ocean region. Israel has already deployed Iron Dome and Iron Beam systems within the UAE, reflecting a deep convergence against radical Islamist movements and regional instability. Ankara's growing ties with Islamabad—spanning joint weapon production and prospective Turkish naval access to Pakistani ports—further intertwines Middle Eastern security dynamics with the Indian subcontinent. Although Washington remains Israel's ultimate security guarantor, these dual emerging strategic axes highlight shifting regional alignments, deepening maritime links, and eroding traditional American influence.

The forward deployment of the Iron Beam laser defence system alongside Iron Dome batteries in the United Arab Emirates marks an operational transition toward layered, directed-energy point defence against high-volume uncrewed aerial vehicle salvos. Directed-energy integration addresses the severe cost-imbalance of expending interceptors like Tamir missiles against cheap asymmetric drones in the Persian Gulf littoral. However, laser weapon performance remains constrained by atmospheric optics, humidity, and dust interference inherent to the Gulf maritime environment.

These environmental factors force reliance on kinetic Tamir interceptors during heavy dust storms, preserving a necessary role for traditional surface-to-air missile batteries across the Gulf. Furthermore, powering directed-energy hardware like Iron Beam on foreign forward positions demands dedicated tactical power architecture that expands the physical footprint of Gulf point-defence sites.
