Russia Is Expanding Its Long-Range Strike Drone Network

Commercial satellite imagery reveals Russia has expanded dedicated launch infrastructure across ten sites, constructing extended 280-foot rails designed for newer jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 strike drones. This infrastructure expansion enhances Moscow's capability to stage massed long-range aerial bombardments against Ukrainian critical targets while bringing NATO territory in Poland and the Baltic States within operational range.

By shifting from propeller-driven Shahed-136 platforms to faster, jet-propelled variants carrying 200-pound payloads, Russian forces aim to bypass lower-tier air defenses and specialized drone interceptors. Domestic production at the Alabuga complex has scaled rapidly, enabling launch volleys exceeding 1,000 units within a single 24-hour period. These low-cost munitions impose severe economic cost-asymmetries on defenders forced to expend scarce surface-to-air interceptors. Furthermore, the construction of permanent launch pads at sites like Tsymbulova provides Russian forces with durable launch capacity to conduct gray-zone operations along NATO's eastern flank.

This infrastructure commitment suggests Russian military planners assess Ukrainian deep-strike assets, such as the Lyutyi drone, as insufficient to suppress fixed launch nodes at scale.

Concentrating launch operations in fixed installations streamlines forward ammunition supply chains from the Alabuga assembly plant. Rather than distributing small drone consignments to dozens of dispersed tactical units, direct rail shipments to major hubs simplify inventory management and rapid multi-salvo preparation. Consequently, the primary operational constraint on Russian long-range strike capacity has migrated from launch pad availability at Tsymbulova to the delivery throughput of micro-turbojet components for the Geran-5.
