Ukraine fails to halt Russian barrage as Zelensky blames partners for ‘horrific casualties’

Ukrainian air defense forces failed to intercept any incoming Russian missiles during an overnight barrage targeting Kyiv, resulting in 17 fatalities and over 50 injuries. Russian forces launched 24 ballistic missiles, four hypersonic cruise missiles, and 115 attack drones, successfully destroying transportation hubs, rail platforms, and major supermarket distribution centers across the capital region.

President Volodymyr Zelensky attributed the failure to a critical shortage of Western anti-ballistic munitions, warning that Ukraine had run out of air defense interceptors as partner deliveries dropped threefold compared with 2025. Ukraine relies exclusively on U.S.-designed Patriot systems to counter ballistic threats, but stockpiles have been severely depleted by the war in Iran alongside manufacturing bottlenecks. European allies remain hesitant to transfer active batteries, while President Donald Trump reversed a deal allowing localized Ukrainian interceptor production. As winter approaches, Kyiv is urging partners to impose sanctions on foreign components feeding Moscow's missile production.
