The US Army is evolving its traditional combined arms framework to integrate a proposed family of seven unmanned capabilities across tactical echelons. This integration aims to preserve the survivability and lethality of manned formations operating under persistent enemy observation and electronic warfare. Modern land warfare increasingly occurs within highly transparent environments where sensor-to-shooter timelines are drastically compressed.
To navigate this, the proposed 'Deadly Seven' framework categorises unmanned platforms into first-person-view, intelligence, bomber, sensor, relay, resupply, and deception drones. These systems collectively enhance the core warfighting functions of movement, strike, and protection. They do not replace traditional forces. Instead, they augment them by shortening targeting cycles, securing lines of communication, and complicating enemy targeting. Ultimately, the service must adapt its training infrastructure, joint integration processes, and FM 3-0 operational doctrine to sustain these low-cost, high-volume capabilities against peer adversaries in future multi-domain operations.
Integrating the 'Deadly Seven' unmanned capabilities represents a fundamental shift in US Army tactical manoeuvre under FM 3-0. Rather than treating robotic platforms as auxiliary tools, this framework embeds them into the 1st Armoured Brigade Combat Team's organic fires. This structural shift challenges the heavy armour doctrine traditionally practised by the 3rd Infantry Division. Consequently, tactical success at the National Training Center depends on synchronising electromagnetic signatures alongside physical movements.
This integration operates by linking sensor drones directly to FPV and bomber platforms, bypassing division-level intelligence clearance. By decentralising targeting authority to platoon leaders within the 1st Cavalry Division, the system shortens sensor-to-shooter loops to under ninety seconds. This rapid cycle prevents adversaries from exploiting brief windows of exposure during high-intensity exercises at Fort Irwin.
