Integrating the Deadly Seven: Evolved Combined Arms for the Drone Age

The US Army is evolving its traditional combined arms framework to integrate a proposed family of seven unmanned capabilities across tactical echelons. This integration aims to preserve the survivability and lethality of manned formations operating under persistent enemy observation and electronic warfare. Modern land warfare increasingly occurs within highly transparent environments where sensor-to-shooter timelines are drastically compressed.

To navigate this, the proposed 'Deadly Seven' framework categorises unmanned platforms into first-person-view, intelligence, bomber, sensor, relay, resupply, and deception drones. These systems collectively enhance the core warfighting functions of movement, strike, and protection. They do not replace traditional forces. Instead, they augment them by shortening targeting cycles, securing lines of communication, and complicating enemy targeting. Ultimately, the service must adapt its training infrastructure, joint integration processes, and FM 3-0 operational doctrine to sustain these low-cost, high-volume capabilities against peer adversaries in future multi-domain operations.
