The US Space Force is currently developing the Space Data Network (SDN) to serve as an integrated, high-capacity orbital data transport backbone for the Joint Force. In May 2026, the service awarded a single provider a $2.29 billion award to deliver an SDN prototype by late 2027.
This rapid acquisition strategy risks repeating the Pentagon's 2006 launch market consolidation, which successfully secured short-term space access but ultimately created a costly monopoly by 2013. To mitigate this long-term strategic dependency, the Space Force recently issued a multi-vendor award to build standardised SDN interfaces. Interoperability is critical. The Pentagon must establish government-controlled, transparent standards to ensure future provider diversity. Meanwhile, Congress must provide dedicated funding to on-ramp new vendors and preserve market competition. Ultimately, maintaining an open architecture will foster a competitive low Earth orbit satellite services market that benefits both the United States and its international allies.
Single-source prototyping for the Space Data Network establishes an immediate industrial path dependency. When the Space Force concentrates early capital on a single prime contractor, it inadvertently standardises the sub-tier component supply chain around that vendor's proprietary architecture. Alternative component manufacturers lose market share. Consequently, smaller hardware vendors face the choice of adapting their production lines to the prime contractor's specifications or risking exclusion from the military space economy.
This structural exclusion directly threatens the resilience of the broader low Earth orbit industrial base supporting the Space Force. By bottlenecking military demand through one prime integrator, the Pentagon limits the financial viability of independent satellite bus and optical inter-satellite link manufacturers. Without diverse government demand, these critical sub-tier suppliers will struggle to sustain the research and development cycles necessary to compete with vertically integrated prime contractors like SpaceX.
